puha - the super green

Puha is a superfood! It is nutritionally rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, Niacin, very high levels of Vitamin C & minerals including calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, sodium, potassium, copper and zinc. It also provides protein, some essential fatty acids, carotenoids, fiber, and oxalic acid.

It is primarily used as a digestive tonic and blood purifier, to improve body function. Also, for treating hemorrhages and constipation. Puha is good for gut health and has a cleansing effect on all the tissues of the body.

Externally the leaves are crushed and put on cuts as an antiseptic & skin regenerator, very useful in the garden! Topically, the fresh sap escharotic, is also used to apply to wart and corns to erode them.

Its delish wholesome goodness! Some people juice it for the high chlorophyll content, it's great in stews, soups & boil ups. Used similarly to spinach in any dish, you can also dehydrate it and save it over the warmer seasons to add to soups and stews!

Today due to roadside pollutants, we encourage whanau to grow puha in their maara. Once established it self seeds and will continue to provide you with an on-going harvest for your whanau.
